This is the third drawing in my series of iconic, kind of crinkly-faced television actors from the 1970’s. This was maybe the hardest one for me to get right, requiring lots of pencil sketching, erasing, and more pencil-sketching until I thought I finally recognized Don Knotts on the page.
Part of the reason it’s so difficult is that I generally try to create an image that doesn’t really exist out there in photographs. I wanted to capture Mr. Knotts in his Mr. Furley era, but I also wanted to use an expression of his from his The Ghost and Mr. Chicken days. So I combined what I saw from multiple photographs to create what you see here
I think it’s probably the most fun & successful of this series of drawings.
